Botox and Dysport
Botox (made by Allergan) and Dysport (made by Galderma) are brand names for botulinum toxin, which is an FDA-approved neurotoxin that is widely used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
Botox and Dysport reduce the appearance of both static and dynamic wrinkles by reducing the strength of contraction of the muscles that creative the wrinkles in the first place.
Dynamic wrinkles are ones that are not visible when your face is relaxed and are only apparent when you smile (crows feet), raise your forehead (horizontal lines on the forehead) or furrow your brow (11’s between the eyebrows).
Static wrinkles are wrinkles that have been etched into the skin over time and are seen when your face is at rest. Over time, dynamic wrinkles “crease” the skin and become static wrinkles. Botox and Dysport treat dynamic wrinkles almost immediately (it takes up to 7-10 days to see the full effect of Botox or Dysport) and can smooth static wrinkles over time.
Preventing the formation of static wrinkles in the first place is the most efficient way of preserving a youthful appearance. Many clients are adopting the strategy of “preventative Botox” as early as their 20s to prevent the formation of etched lines and wrinkles.
Botox and Dysport are both safe and effective for the treatment of wrinkles and have essentially the same mechanisms of action. There is a small difference in molecular structure between the two, making one or the other a better option for certain treatment areas in certain people. Most people will get the same outstanding results with either product, lasting about 3-4 months.
Botox and Dysport are not only used to treat wrinkles. Botulinum toxin can be used to treat a variety of other problems such as:
Enlarged masseter muscles (chewing muscles)
Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) of the palms, feet, and underarms
Straw lines around the mouth
Dermal fillers are used to augment facial features, replace facial volume lost due to aging, and contour the face. Dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally-occurring molecule in the body present in almost every cell! Hyaluronic acid is responsible for keeping cells hydrated, and 50% of the body’s hyaluronic acid is found in the skin.
Dermal fillers have many indications:
Augmentation of facial features (such as lips or cheeks)
Restoring facial volume loss
As we age, the fat pads that provide volume and plumpness to our faces atrophy and start to sag. Dermal fillers can be used under the eyes, in the mid and lower face, as well as the temples to add a rested, lifted look.
Both men and women can benefit from the contouring effects of dermal fillers. Facial feminization is accomplished by creating softer, rounder features. Facial masculinization focuses on accentuating the jawline and chin, creating a more angular appearance.
Smoothing of deep lines and wrinkles
Deeply etched wrinkles can be plumped and smoothed by placing dermal filler beneath them. Dermal filler is used to treat straw lines around the lips and deep nasolabial folds.
The appearance of deep scars can be improved by placing dermal filler beneath the scar tissue.
