Joint Injections Q&A

What are joint injections?

Joint injections use a needle to place medications or other substances directly inside a joint. Unlike oral medications, which have to travel through your digestive system to enter your bloodstream and provide pain relief, joint injections go right to the source of your pain.

Advanced imaging helps practitioners “see” the needle as it enters the space within the targeted joint. This ensures the injection reaches the precise location where it can do the most to relieve pain.

Depending on the type of joint injection you need, a quick injection of local anesthetic might reduce sensation in the treatment area before the main joint injection.

What role does PRP play in joint injections?

PRP is a powerful solution created from a small sample of your own blood. A device called a centrifuge separates the platelets and other solids from the liquid plasma for a concentrated solution of platelets.

Platelets are rich in unique proteins called growth factors, which promote new tissue development. Injecting PRP into a damaged or inflamed joint helps your body knit together new tissues while delivering anti-inflammatory benefits.

How can joint injections help manage pain?

There are several different types of joint injections, and your practitioner begins by assessing your pain and explaining which approach best fits your needs. You’ll receive all the details needed to make an informed decision about your treatment path.

Steroid medications are a common type of joint injection. These treatments deliver medications that reduce inflammation and often contain a local anesthetic. Steroid injections can help manage pain but don’t help address the root cause of your joint pain.

Orthobiologics take a different approach, transferring natural substances from one part of your body to another to aid tissue growth and repair. Examples include platelet-rich plasma (PRP), extracellular vesicles (EVs), and Wharton’s jelly.

Wharton’s jelly is a gelatin-like connective tissue found in the umbilical cord. It’s rich in mesenchymal stem cells, which can differentiate into numerous cell types. Injecting Wharton’s jelly into areas of tissue damage may help promote natural tissue repair.

EVs are tiny extracellular microvesicles that help cells communicate. In pain management, injected EVs offer an alternative to stem cell therapies. Known as a cell-free treatment, injections of EVs target damaged cell types and prompt regenerative processes.
